accountability (life) update:

I had a dream last night that a couple of y’all were coming at me about the report indefinitely lingering at 70% done so I guess it’s time for another accountability update.

Our move has been a bit tumultuous as our plan to stay with extended family crashed and burned in real BBFVFS fashion. Suffice it to say (lulz) that we have been living in an approximately 300 sq ft hotel room for nine days now and the approval on the apartment we have a deposit on cannot come fast enough.

@kashmiresims to answer your dm question about why deleting thumbnails is mechanically bad - because the relevant cache is going to rebuild every time you open any catalog in game whether it’s been wiped or not. Better to give it a solid foundation (an undeleted cache) so it has to do less work. More work = more crashy crashy. As I said in my earlier thumbnails post, if you DO have a legitimate periodic need to delete a cache file because, for instance, of a major content change, rebuild it in an empty testing hood to reduce strain.

I am NOT an expert. I have not looked at the actual code of the game myself (in this respect). This is what I have pieced together as knowledge from reading all the available resources, reviewing the anecdotal evidence submitted in the survey, and my own - meandering - experience.

hey guys! am i correct in assuming that if my ts2 game crashes in build/buy after a few minutes/ changing categories, that i have too many custom items in game? i don’t think it’s conflicts because the categories don’t matter, and it happens if i take out the new folder of build/buy only and put other new stuff in, but it’s solved if i take the new folder out and don’t add any new objects.

i need to clean out my objects anyway (i have about 20gb of cc and don’t use most of it LOL) so if that’s the fix then i will go ahead and put the effort in tomorrow and declutter the catalogs

boost!

Depends, are you regenerating thumbnails? If so, that’s totally normal for your game to crash. It just got overloaded with thumbnails. To avoid it, do just tiny bits of going through the catalog, then exit the lot and enter again to do the next batch.

Another possible reason is GUID conflicts (often straight up duplicates, like say, 5 copies of the BB Niche). They cause a surprisingly large number of crashes and resolving those could really help. I recommend picknmix’ HCDU+ to look for them.

If neither works, yeah, either some new cc is hella borked or it’s time to start cleaning out your dl folder

@angelapleasant a catalogue clean out is the most efficient way to fix this if, as @fireflowersims pointed out, thumbnail regeneration and cc conflicts are not the culprit.

You can also buy more time working in build/buy by turning your neighbors off and lot view distance setting to small while you’re building.

Do NOT try and play live mode in the same play session you have been doing intense build/buy work. Quit, reboot the machine, relaunch the game.

There is also the more annoying method of live-monitoring RAM usage and waiting for the Empty Standby List routine to run every fifth minute when the game is channeling a lot of memory into standby. I’m going to explain this is more depth in the pink flashing report but if you Google “sims 2 empty standby list” you’ll pretty much get all the relevant info. The main thing is actually giving it time to work before you take a major stress action like loading/leaving a lot, or changing catalog sections, or generating new sims, or light changes/season changes in live mode.

life hack: cc shopping in the defaults database kills two birds with one stone! just download the customs of all the things you don’t end up choosing as defaults! everything’s in one place! no more yucky maxis eating up your texture memory! much organization, many choice, such amaze!

the thing about maxis clothes is there are SOOO many of them, you don’t even realize till you’re combing one by one to replace them how many files it us

does anyone know the relative value of using DRs vs hiders? Does the game still have to read the texture in the file before hiding it in the catalog? I have DRs for clothes but hiders for hair because 4 colors isn’t enough and I have meticulously sort-indexed by hair length and texture.

VERY important and helpful comments from Lowedeus on the DRs vs Hiders question!

Presumably this applies outside CAS to build/buy content, too, but I know those are far less widely nor comprehensively available. And CAS is where you get a lot of 1024x1024 textures, lots of polys… DR DR DR your clothes if not also your hair. (I am not doing my hair YET because I’m on on 8 color custom sort-indexed system with full maxis hiders. If gameplay in live mode tells me I’ll need to do otherwise I’ll cross that bridge (to either clouds or afterglow I imagine) when I get there.)

To sum up: DRs are the gold standard and you should use as many as possible to “get rid of” maxis anything you don’t use. However, hiders are better than nothing. This is relevant for pink flashing as well as general load times/cataLAG (see what I did there).

@lowedeus when you said caches, did you mean the thumbnail caches or groups/accessory.cache?

But seriously to all creators, if your clothing file has a normal map that looks like this:

image

It’s completely redundant. Your piece will look just the same with or without it.

But what it does do, since it’s still a texture, it takes space. And while that ~4KB for each might not seem like much, it accumulates. I’ve literally deleted hundreds of these, and that’s not not much anymore.

If you’ve experienced weird issues from deleting them, it’s because you’ll also need to delete all the stdMatNormalMapTexture lines from material definitions. It’s these 4 lines:

image

Deleting the junk already before making recolor files is a time-saving habit.

reblogging because minimizing textures anywhere helps games everywhere (and because i’m doing this myself as i set up my new clothing defaults and need to be able to check back about the mmat because your girl only does bhav work) (so many gray boxes) (simpe why can’t i select multiple rows in the mmat?)

accountability update:

I have one more week of work before our interstate move; our house still needs to sell; I’m feeling quite a bit of shame about the survey defects that are somewhat compromising the data if not the conclusions; and I’m pretty sure all the really useful tidbits are out there already, which are all demotivators.

tldr the binge catalog organization continues.

I will aim to log a few hours on the pink flashing report this weekend, though. I promised. Ask the Watcher to send more showings. If I have to take my laptop out of the house, I’ll have no choice but to do the report since it’s all I can do without internet and power :)

Matching infant face templates for SpookyMuffin’s Defaults!

A set of 28 (22 by me, 6 are original files from Meowingcookie and named appropriately) baby/infant face templates to match the defaults by SpookyMuffin. I made these for a friend as a thank you for testing my first set, but I figured someone else might use these default faces and want matching baby faces!

TO USE: Download SpookyMuffin’s set at the link above and then download my baby faces and pop them into your mods folder together.

This will correctly link these 28 defaults for babies to their toddler/child/teen/YA/adult/elder ages which means you will be able to see your babies’ genetics from birth! (Pictures below)

Many thanks to Meowingcookie from ModTheSims for the original Maxis baby face templates, and the tutorial to make my own defaults to match. I got there in the end!

Important info: There is a bit of an issue with face number 19. It looks very weird on babies and only slightly better on toddlers - but it fixes itself when the sim becomes a child:

image

You cannot have Meowingcookie’s Maxis baby defaults and these defaults in your game at the same time - at least I presume you can’t, because I used Meowingcookie’s files.. not sure why you would want to anyways, because this is a set :)

I plan to make more of these to match a lot of the popular default replacements, so if you have any requests please let me know!

Download under the cut, and enjoy! Thanks for the requests, already! I’m starting to work on them tomorrow :)

I’m working on the new version of my trait chemistry mod today, and having trouble coming up with a name for a completely new turn on/turn off. Figured I’d make a poll to see if other people would have a better idea.

The mod is going to utilize @anachronisims’s new traits, and this particular turn on will check inventory for Dislikes Animals, Dislikes Cats, Dislikes Children, Dislikes Dogs, Hates the Outdoors, and Grumpy.

What would you call this turn on/turn off?

Crabby

Grumpy

Grouchy

Irritable

Something else (please comment!)

See Results

I am planning on using the Crab icon for this, if that helps! I’ve also been trying to rename the turn-ons so they don’t use the same name as an individual trait.

Hoping to release this sometime early next week!

TS2 LINK DECAY TREASURE HUNT

“Alice Ann” was posted on BeckyLynnSims’ forum (briefly live in 2020 - a noble pandemic project idea) with an SFS link that has since been deleted. (Other sims uploaded on the site have live box links, but not this one. C’est la sims vie.) I found her on @2fingerswhiskey’s 1920s CC in 2024 Pinterest and I MUST HAVE HER. She is the ideal model (CC incl) for a very important character in my new neighborhood.

I will venmo US$5 to the first person who can send me a working link to this sim download.

I will also venmo US$2 to the first person who can tell me what her hair mesh/accessory is, because I don’t have time to comb all the hairs right now.

This is not a joke. This is not a drill. I will give you money if you can fulfill this WCIF with a working download link. The contest ends on March 29, 2024 or whenever someone sends me a working link, whichever comes first.

Please reblog even if you can’t help directly, maybe one of your followers can.

UPDATE: @es-sims gave me a lead on the hair.

Traded with shastakiss and superfr0g at the big trade off, you can see all of them here!

“Aranea” is Nyren recolors on a Trapping mesh very ungooglably called “Dress With Wedges.” Can anyone help me locate Trapping’s original download, additional recolors, or any teen conversions of the mesh/any recols?
